The HL7 FHIR Fundamentals Course is a four-week online course that provides an in-depth overview of HL7's hottest standard - Fast Healthcare interoperability Resources (FHIR®).

Who should attend:

  • Software developers and implementers
  • Those responsible for implementing FHIR interfaces, architects and project leads that make decisions about where FHIR might be used

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Read the FHIR specification and know how it is organized
  • Understand the concept of resource and the different interoperability paradigms supported by FHIR
  • Comprehend the use of controlled vocabularies, master files, and entity registries in FHIR
  • Read and write FHIR resources
  • Understand FHIR profiles and constraints and the use of extensions
  • Understand the use of REST in FHIR, FHIR documents, transactions and messaging

What to Expect

This is an asynchronous, instructor-led online course that allows you to work at your own pace. Learning takes place through discussions with the instructor, tutors and peers. Assessments are in the form of weekly assignments, quizzes, exams and projects. Plan on spending 5 to 7 hours per week. There are no live lectures to attend.

You can expect:

  • Instructors who are HL7 FHIR experts and working professionals
  • HL7-certified tutors providing evaluation and feedback on each module
  • Discussion forums that promote engagement and interaction
  • Practical exercises within each module to apply what you have learned

Prerequisites

  • No previous experience with FHIR or other HL7 standards is needed
  • Familiarity with XML or JSON and some background in software development is recommended (exercises will be easier if participants have an XML or JSON editing environment)

**Students enrolled and taking classes during the duration of the coursein an accredited Bachelor, Master or Doctoral programs qualify for this discount. Certificate programs do not qualify. Students are required to submit proof of enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program at an accredited university or college (in English). Either of the following documents is acceptable proof of enrollment:

  • A transcript showing the student is actively enrolled and taking classes in the university or college during the duration of the course.
  • A letter from the Dean or Department chair stating that the student is enrolled for a time period that includes the duration of the course. This letter must be on school letterhead, display a school seal or logo and contain a signature and phone number of the Dean or Department Chair.

Cancellation Policy

The course fee minus $50 processing fee will be refunded for cancellations before close of registration. For all cancellations after close of registration, there will be no refunds.
